FIG CAKE ("smokvenjak")
Another Croatian Treat from Tom
1 kg. ( 2 pounds) dried figs
250 g. ( 8 oz.) coarsely chopped walnuts or roasted almonds
a fennel branch
Clean and grind figs.
Chop walnuts or almonds.
Add nuts to ground figs and add just enough brandy to allow
mixture to be kneaded into round cakes.
Bake the cakes at low temperature until they dry, then allow to cool.
Garnish each cake with a branch of fennel and wrap in wax paper.
The dish is appropriately served in the wintertime with a glass of brandy.
